Description

Austin Custom Brass Flugelhorn Mouthpieces

I struggled for a LONG time trying to find a flugelhorn mouthpiece that would do what I wanted it to do, while sounding how I wanted it to sound. That's why ACB now offers a line of flugelhorn mouthpieces designed to the highest possible quality standards. Our ACB Flugelhorn mouthpieces come in three different cup depths, many rim sizes, two shank tapers, and several finishes. Check out the videos below to hear all three depths!

Check out the rims and comparisons here!

Cup:

FD: Our deepest flugelhorn mouthpiece, designed to give a "horn-like" darkness to your sound. Other extra-deep flugel pieces I've played have been very challenging to keep in tune and also play any notes above the staff. Our FD cup is VERY deep and will most likely require a stronger player to utilize the full capabilities of this piece.

MDF: A general "all-purpose" flugel mouthpiece that is dark enough, yet still easy to project and cut above the staff for when I've had to play first parts on flugel. Our MDF cup is by far the most popular cup depth we sell.

F: This mouthpiece has our shallow cup depth, which works great for occasional flugel doublers, or players who need to play more aggressive flugel parts.

Rim:

1 Series mouthpieces: Similar to the Papa/00 in the Legacy series, the rim is .684".

1 ¼ seriesthis has a classic Bach Mt. Vernon 1-1/4C mouthpiece rim that's blended in the CAD program to our cups. The rim is .673".

1 ½ Series: this piece has a classic Bach Mt. Vernon 1-½ C mouthpiece rim that's blended in the CAD program to our cups. The rim is .668".

  • "Trent makes some ridiculously good mouthpieces. He's either a genius or completely lottery lucky on mouthpiece designs. His 1.25Orch model is to die for. Try it for yourself" -a satisfied customer

2 Series rim (based on our ACB MV3C rim): this piece has a classic Bach Mt. Vernon 3C mouthpiece rim that's blended in the CAD program to our cups. The rim is .664".

  • "I have the MV3C and the MV3L. Both have a great sound and are really easy to play." -Mario

3 Series mouthpieces: same rim as on my Legacy 3C, which is my take on a fantastic Bach 3C mouthpiece from the late 60's; I have never played a 3C like it.

4 Series rim (based on our ACB 3CS rim): the rim is comfortable, with an inner diameter of .650".

5 Series mouthpieces: long considered a transitional mouthpiece for the student, I've spent a bunch on time on this piece as most of my earlier prototypes didn't make the cut. This mouthpiece has an incredibly rich tone with fantastic articulations and ease in all registers. It's a great, comfortable mouthpiece with a .644" inner diameter!

  • "I've given Trent's 3C mouthpiece a 5 star review in the past and thought I'd do the same for the 3CS (now the 4CS in our new standard line) that I'm currently playing... It's quite simply the most comfortable and most responsive 3C type mouthpiece I've ever played with a fat, warm core to the sound. It's just a super efficient design that sounds great, what else do you need in a mouthpiece! Thanks so much for all the great gear you've made available to the trumpet world, keep up the great work Trent!" -Ray

10 ½ series mouthpieces: while this is a fairly small diameter mouthpiece (.630") it produces a big tone, with a fine high register and resonating low register. I started with this piece thinking it would a good mouthpiece for students to start on, but I find it very good for all players, especially those with very thin lips and ones who want a bit more corner support.

  • "About a year ago, I switched to the ACB Lead 1. I have virtually played every brand on the market over the past 20 years and nothing has helped secure my playing like the Lead 1. The sound, articulation and projection is second to none. Trent is not only a first class musician but also a first class gentleman and businessman. Kudos to making equipment that works with you to maximize the musician within!" -a satisfied customer

TA1 Series (designed for my own personal playing needs): While the TA1 is based on Clark Terry’s mouthpiece, I made a few alterations and improvements. Clark’s original rim design was VERY flat, so for the TA1 I modified the rim and cup to make it more accessible for today’s modern player. The TA1 rim is still flat, but not nearly as pronounced as on Clark’s mouthpiece. I increased the diameter of the piece as well, as the original was a tiny bit small for my taste. The inner diameter is .639".

    1.25CMDF

Posted by Bob Miller on 4th May 2019

I went from a Monette FLG2 Prana Resonance to a Bob Reeves 43FE. Both were solid mouthpieces, but weren't for me. The 1.25CMDF seems to work nicely with my vintage Couesnon, and lets me have the same rim size on all of my horns. Great mouthpiece!

Flugelhorn Mouthpiece - Lead 1.25 MDF

Posted by James Eldreth on 8th Apr 2019

I absolutely love the ACB Lead 1.25 MDF! It plays wonderfully in every register! It has replaced my Yamaha Japan Bobby Shew as my go-to on flugel. The two are very similar, but the ACB has a softer feel on my chops, making it more comfortable to play. Perhaps it is because I'm now also playing an ACB flugel, but the upper register notes slot better with the ACB piece than the Yamaha.

    MV3C

Posted by Karen McCarthy on 24th Mar 2019

So I decided I had to go with a mouthpeice upgrade for my Doubler. I'm so happy I did. This is my first ACB mouthpeice and I am hooked. The feel is so comfortable and the sound much warmer than the stock MP that came with the horn. I've never been one to switch up mouthpieces but due to the expertise and knowledge of the folks making these, I may need to try one of their lead mouthpieces.

    Flugel Horn 3C MDF Mouthpiece

Posted by Graham on 5th Mar 2019

The 3C MDF is a lovely deep funnel flugel piece with an open bore (would not require the deeper model - I came from a British Brass Band setting and was brought up on Cornet with DW 2 so like a rich tone - this is perfect to me); plays beautifully and is a great match for me as a player, my flugel (an Eclipse 0.413 bore), and the sound I want to produce . Highly recommended. Great match. Great service, very prompt as was in stock and arrived in Canada in a few days.

    Nice flugel piece!

Posted by Mac McGowan on 14th Aug 2018

Ordered this mouthpiece with my new custom Adams F1. I just described my preferred rim, cup style and the sound I was going for and let the guys take it from there. Very pleased with this mouthpiece. It’s comfortable and the medium deep cup allows me to get all kinds of tonal colors.

    New Austin flugelhorn mouthpiece

Posted by Peter Welker on 13th Jul 2018

Heyyyyy guys.... I just want to tell you HOW happy I am with your flugelhorn mouthpieces that I recently purchased. First off , Josh McDonald was SO helpful in helping me choose the best mouthpiece for my 2 different flugelhorns. I have been playing professionally for 65 years and have bought probably 40 mouthpieces over the years.... I definitely have the trumpet player's " curse ".....that being the lifelong search for that PERFECT mouthpiece....LOL Well.....as they said in all of those Mafia movies..." LOOK NO FOIDA "......I am completely satisfied and SO happy with my Austin custom mouthpieces......and....while I was playing chess online 2 weeks ago....this GREAT looking flugelhorn kept appearing on my screen..it was of course the Austin F5...I tried to ignore it for the next week , but it kept magically appearing. I of course had to call Josh to see what the " skinny " was on that horn. Josh said that he thought the F1 might be right up my alley and that he would send me a link to Trent Austin playing it . I received the link the next morning and checked it out right away. ( of course Trent is a MONSTER player and could make any horn sound great ) Anyhow....my wife saw me checking out the demonstration with Trent and she said..." If you sound like that with that horn....order it right away " Knowing that in my wildest dreams I could NEVER sound like Trent.....I ordered it immediately ! LOL I was just told that the horn will be heading this way in a week or so. I am Soooo excited to play it !!! That's my testimony and I am stickin' to it ! my website......www.peterwelker.com Austin in Boston...I like the sound of that.....except NOW...he is in Kansas City.." Here I Come " ! Luv ya brothers ! Peter
