Austin Custom Brass Hybrid Series Trumpet mouthpieces

(available in standard blank only)

After a lot of tweaking and prototyping, the Hybrid TF Series is here! This mouthpiece is a great option for the following needs and should be a welcome addition to any player's arsenal:

  • Solo playing in any situation
  • Flugel doubling on trumpet when the player cannot either afford a flugelhorn or have access to one (with the flight restrictions these days this could come in quite handy!)
  • Softer playing when you are "getting the hand" from the conductor
  • A great warm-down mouthpiece or to be used when your chops are especially fatigued after hard performances.

The mouthpiece is only available in the STANDARD blank. The rims are exactly identical to the New Standard Series mouthpieces line. Call the Mouthpiece Hotline with questions or to place an order! +1-781-816-9664

Check out this video of me demonstrating the TF mouthpiece (along with a few other ACB models) and the low-fi Sound file below:

Welcome to the NEW STANDARD!

"Making custom mouthpieces is one of the main reasons I opened up my shop. I wanted to make a mouthpiece that felt comfortable, had a rich sound full of overtones, and didn't zap my endurance! After a lot of time on the lathe, I'm proud to say I've developed a comprehensive offering of mouthpieces sizes for any gig! We have the absolute best tolerances in the industry!" -Trent Austin

Why a new standard line?   It's a simplified version of our previous standard line mouthpieces with a bunch of improvements over the past decade plus.  Lots of companies update their products annually and we feel like it’s time we finally updated our line with all of the amazing improvements we have been implementing over these 12+ years.   We've simplified the line a great deal and eliminated a lot of frankly confusing options (although anything can still be custom ordered in our legacy listing).  The introduction of our Custom Reserve  line showed us many things in terms of ease of stock and having products almost always available for you. This makes it easier for us to always have pieces in stock and also far easier for our dealers too!

The best part there's not going to be an increase in price for the customer. It seems like everything else is increasing in price, the ACB New Standard series will be still available at the same price as our current standard line.  This has taken us close to a year to work on and we are so excited to show you the fruits of our labor!

Most of our ACB mouthpieces are in stock in our selected preferred  blank.  This has been chosen by testing a great deal of options and we honestly feel these are the best blanks for the new line.  Of course  other ACB blanks are custom made to order and may not be in stock. Please note that almost every manufacturer measures in a slightly different place, so the comparison information sheet is for broad comparisons only.

Please note there are no returns on custom orders; gold plating is considered a custom order.

1 Series mouthpieces: Similar to the Papa/00 in the Legacy series, the rim is .684".

1 ¼ seriesthis has a classic Bach Mt. Vernon 1-1/4C mouthpiece rim that's blended in the CAD program to our cups. The rim is .673".

1 ½ Series: this piece has a classic Bach Mt. Vernon 1-½ C mouthpiece rim that's blended in the CAD program to our cups. The rim is .668".

  • "Trent makes some ridiculously good mouthpieces. He's either a genius or completely lottery lucky on mouthpiece designs. His 1.25Orch model is to die for. Try it for yourself" -a satisfied customer

2 Series rim (based on our ACB MV3C rim): this piece has a classic Bach Mt. Vernon 3C mouthpiece rim that's blended in the CAD program to our cups. The rim is .664".

  • "I have the MV3C and the MV3L. Both have a great sound and are really easy to play." -Mario

3 Series mouthpieces: same rim as on my Legacy 3C, which is my take on a fantastic Bach 3C mouthpiece from the late 60's; I have never played a 3C like it.

4 Series rim (based on our ACB 3CS rim): the rim is comfortable, with an inner diameter of .650".

5 Series mouthpieces: long considered a transitional mouthpiece for the student, I've spent a bunch on time on this piece as most of my earlier prototypes didn't make the cut. This mouthpiece has an incredibly rich tone with fantastic articulations and ease in all registers. It's a great, comfortable mouthpiece with a .644" inner diameter!

  • "I've given Trent's 3C mouthpiece a 5 star review in the past and thought I'd do the same for the 3CS (now the 4CS in our new standard line) that I'm currently playing... It's quite simply the most comfortable and most responsive 3C type mouthpiece I've ever played with a fat, warm core to the sound. It's just a super efficient design that sounds great, what else do you need in a mouthpiece! Thanks so much for all the great gear you've made available to the trumpet world, keep up the great work Trent!" -Ray

10 ½ series mouthpieces: while this is a fairly small diameter mouthpiece (.630") it produces a big tone, with a fine high register and resonating low register. I started with this piece thinking it would a good mouthpiece for students to start on, but I find it very good for all players, especially those with very thin lips and ones who want a bit more corner support.

  •  "About a year ago, I switched to the ACB Lead 1. I have virtually played every brand on the market over the past 20 years and nothing has helped secure my playing like the Lead 1. The sound, articulation and projection is second to none. Trent is not only a first class musician but also a first class gentleman and businessman. Kudos to making equipment that works with you to maximize the musician within!" -a satisfied customer

TA1 Series (designed for my own personal playing needs): While the TA1 is based on Clark Terry’s mouthpiece, I made a few alterations and improvements. Clark’s original rim design was VERY flat, so for the TA1 I modified the rim and cup to make it more accessible for today’s modern player. The TA1 rim is still flat, but not nearly as pronounced as on Clark’s mouthpiece. I increased the diameter of the piece as well, as the original was a tiny bit small for my taste. The inner diameter is .639".

TF 1.5 deep cup trumpet mpc

Posted by Rick Roenne on 23rd May 2021

When this came in, I could not wait to try it. I was very impressed. Range, tone, flexibility, centered notes, slotting, everything was in place. Also checked the venturi, all the notes were in tune with the tuner. Made some adjustments on the tuning slide, but once the main tuning note was set, all the other notes feel into place. I have also included the KGU tone intensifier to the mpc and the volume went thru the roof. Never thought that this big a mouthpiece could extend my range that this mpc has done. Unbelievable. I'm not talking about pinching those notes above the staff, I mean full tonally of "C", "D", "E", "F", and now even the "G", four ledger lines above the staff. If I keep practicing, maybe one day, even the super "C". Just love it. Thanks guys. I'm going to tell everybody about this one.

    ACB TF mouthpiece

Posted by bill bodine on 21st Feb 2021

Got good advice from Josh at ACB. I wanted a dark sounding mp for playing jazz work. The TF (TATF) has the right sound AND the right resistance, allowing me to get around easily and accurately. Bb

    TATF1 mpc

Posted by Fred Bradley on 7th Feb 2021

I picked up the TATF1 in the traditional blank with an acrylic rim. The TF cup gives you that nice smooth mellow sound. It doesn’t require as noticeable increase of air to support the sound. The acrylic rim is a nice feature as it is softer on the chops. This rim will increase the need to properly support the side / corner embouchure muscles with less bite into the lips.

Hybrid Series TF Mouthpiece, Model 3CS

Posted by Dr Brian S Skrainka on 15th Jun 2019

Absolutely love the Austin Custom Brass Hybrid Series TF Mouthpiece, Model 3CS (silver), for my new Kanstul Model 150 Bb Soprano Trombone. I am a trumpet player and this mouthpiece gives me a really rich, full sound.

    Perfect Fit

Posted by Ryan McCaffrey on 22nd Sep 2018

I was looking for a MPC to provide a darker warmer sound. I have played a 3c for 30 years. First I tried the 3CV. It is a perfect MPC for those looking for a little more warmth but retaining the ability for brightening up if needed. This mouthpiece, though, a 3CTF if just perfect for me. paired with my vintage horns it has a warmth and core like nothing I have ever played.

    Hybrid Trumpet Mouthpiece

Posted by Hal Glidden on 13th Jan 2018

I have three Bb trumpets that I rotate through and added a flugelhorn about a year ago. At first, the deep cup of the flugelhorn mouthpiece was a challenge but the sound was addicting. I recently purchased your MV3C TF hybrid trumpet mouthpiece on your recommendation and could not be happier. It is a true hybrid, providing the best of both instruments -- trumpet and flugelhorn. For me it is a transformative product that deserves the highest praise.

Great piece for small group jazz!

Posted by E. Bone on 22nd Nov 2016

Great hybrid piece that gives you a full, warm sound without sounding too much like a flugel. Extremely easy to play soft passages while maintaining good intonation. Highly recommend trying this mouthpiece!

    5C-TF mouthpiece

Posted by Jason - Australia on 9th May 2015

I wanted something to take the edge off my sound for jazz trio/solo work in small venues. This mouthpiece works nicely. It takes the volume down and removes the sharpness. It is a very heavy in weight compared to Bach 5c too. Very good match to the 5c rim, the TA version is possibly more comfortable but I need to play a full set to confirm that (this is just my first impression). Nice job.

    TA Hybrid MP is Excellent

Posted by bill bodine on 16th Apr 2015

Listening to Trent play various mouthpieces on the same horn (YouTube) is a great way to ascertain the differences in pieces, since the horn and the player remain constant. Trent's demo helped me select the sound arena I was shooting for, knowing of course that my playing style and chops would personalize the final result. The piece itself is beautifully made. Trent has engineered in just the right amount of back pressure, so it doesn't wipe me out as fast as these deep piece tend to do! 4 stars instead of 5 only because I am waiting for the piece that will make me play like Freddie
