    Adams CN2 Custom Series Cornet

Posted by Scott Bogard on 27th Aug 2021

I've waited several months before posting this review, because it was a dramatic change for me, and I wanted to give an honest impression. This is an incredible horn! I used to play vintage cornets, in a small unconventional brass band (alongside trumpets) and I decided I wanted to switch to a modern horn for better valve compression and slotting. I chose the yellow brass bell to give a slightly brighter sound profile to more closely match what I was accustomed to. It is still what I would consider a very dark horn, and much darker than my 1913 York Perfectone, but the sound profile is very flexible and I can make it do whatever I want with a mouthpiece change, or embouchure adjustment. It has a very sweet sound no matter how you push it, while still being tonally diverse. I get excited to play this horn! I cannot overstate this. It's taken practice and made it fun again. The slotting is incredibly tight compared to the vintage horns I was used to, which makes articulated passages much easier to play. It's very free blowing. I feel like it has perfect projection for a small group with a B cup mouthpiece, and I have plenty of endurance to make it through a longer gig. I love the sound, so much that it has redefined what a cornet is supposed to sound like, for me. The build quality is very good. I went for bright silver plate, and aesthetically it is the most beautiful horn I've ever owned. The whole tuning slide trigger makes intonation adjustments very easy, for someone who didn't use triggers previously; I don't use the third slide trigger at all, I don't find it necessary. Overall I'm very satisfied with my purchase! This horn has taken my playing to a new level, and I'll never switch back.
