Amazing Sound for Under $1000!
The Holton TR-156 is a fantastic straight tenor trombone. These can come in different specs and this one is a red brass bell with a dual bore (.533/.547) slide. It has a great tone, with lots of color, clarity to the front of each note and has excellent projection. It blends very well with other trombones in a section and responds quite well to different mouthpieces which makes it ideal for all kinds of ensembles and settings. The dual bore is cool. It makes for a very useful and versatile trombone that is good for concert band, brass quintet, musicals, solo playing, and even jazz. This is a pre-owned trombone and there are some signs of that in the lacquer (some light scratches and some sign of worn lacquer at different spots) but overall it is in very good condition for a vintage horn. The slide is a 7.5/10 (moves easily and freely when lubricated but you might find yourself spritzing a little more often than some other slides and there is some slight, but tolerable, slide noise).
While this is a professional level trombone it would actually make for an excellent trombone for a younger student who would like to start on a larger bore trombone (especially for this price). It is also very well suited for serious trombonists who have an interest in old Holton trombones, are looking for an alternative to an 8H, or want a medium more/dual bore trombone that has the full sound of a large bore but is a little easier to play because of the dual bore.
