This Kanstul 1603 handcraft is their tribute to the great Martin committee trumpet of the '40s and '50s. This horn is in brushed lacquer as you can see and it does play absolutely wonderfully.

There are a few cosmetic issues as you can see. Most notably is that the previous owner covered some of the brushed lacquer spots with some nail polish and it developed this almost crystalline look.

You can see it mostly on contact points. I think the owner thought that this would protect it, but in my opinion actually it detracted a little bit from the instrument's appearance.

We are including the option at checkout to strip the horn back to raw brass.

This will only be a stripping process and not polishing afterwards.

The valves have great compression. The lead pipe looks free of any major issues as well as the tuning slide, which I did run a borescope through.

The previous owner also painted the top caps red.

In terms of how this horn plays, there is a lot of hype about these instruments being the best modern versions of the committee trumpets.

I think it is the easiest playing version of all of the different varieties of committee influenced instruments from the past 20 years.

I think the sound is really complex, dark, warm, and full.

Hopefully there will be a video coming in the next short time of me playing this horn, but I think this is a great playing instrument.

The Martin Committee trumpet. Originally designed as a collaboration among giants of the jazz age, this legendary horn went on to make history with its dark, warm sound. Dizzy played one. Miles played one, as has Chet Baker, Clarke Terry, Maynard Ferguson and many other greats. Faithfully based on the original design, we are now handcrafting a reissue of this iconic trumpet as the Model 1603 – down to the classic #3 bore specs and with the Kanstul commitment to 100% USA-built quality.
