Holy Grail? Charlie Melk Restored 1940 Martin Handcraft Committee Trumpet
Martin1940 Martin Handcraft Committee #2 bore
Restored by Charlie Melk!
Is this the holy grail of vintage trumpets?
This particular trumpet is being sold on consignment from a collector. This one has been meticulously overhauled, and looks absolutely fantastic. Please note that the collector did play the trumpet so you'll see signs of general playing with some slight scratching and signs of usage. This makes sense as it's one of the best Martin handcraft committee trumpets I have personally played (Trent). Valve compression is excellent, the overall horn is an absolute JOY to play. It has the classic Martin sound, although I think this one is a little bit more diverse, overall in terms of its sound colors, and is far more versatile than the leader committee models. I love it!
Check out the unique engraving on this particular trumpet. They were using an engraving pattern that was in between the handcraft committee and the handcraft imperial. It does have the lion on the Bell.
The Martin Handcraft Committee model was the design that came between the Handcraft Imperial (an underrated horn in the Martin lineup) and Committee. It was designed by a "committee" of trumpet makers, although most if not all of the actual design work was allegedly done by Renold Schilke. The Handcraft Committee has a lot more nickel trim, and traditional water keys instead of the trombone style water keys of the Committee. The #2 bore is a medium step bore (around .453" at the valve block). The wrap of the Handcraft Committee is a little tighter than on the Committee, and the bracing is different as well.
