It's no secret that the Olds Super Recording is Trent's favorite vintage trumpet design, so we're always excited when we have a chance to offer one for sale through the shop! This is a beautiful instrument with no additional investment required to get it into playing shape. The valves are super fast and smooth with excellent compression. All of the restoration work has been done, so the horn is ready for you to enjoy!
Check out some videos of Super Recordings we've previously sold in the shop:
This horn has been restored by Charlie Melk, and it looks amazing. You can see some imperfections underneath the lacquer, meaning the horn was not over buffed during restoration. There are some minor dings in the twin-tube leadpipe, but they are merely cosmetic, as they do not affect the inner pipe. This is a wonderful horn that can sound dark and mellow, but also can brighten up quite a bit when given some gas. The serial number places this horn around 1941.
From Robb Stewart:
"The Super Recording trumpet was actually designed for use in the recording studio and specifically for Harold Mitchell, who at the time, was the most sought after for this work. Harold Mitchell's son, Ollie, still owned that first Olds Recording trumpet at the time of his death in 2013. Ollie had his own very successful career as a studio trumpet player. I have not been able to determine the date that the first Super Recording trumpets and cornets were made, but they were not yet offered in the 1939 Olds catalog. I believe that the the first two were made in about 1939, but weren’t offered in the catalogs until a little later. Hopefully, more data will come to light in the future."
