"Trent, you finally made me do what I never thought was possible. I've been playing the TA-1 almost exclusively for a few months, and you know what? I've actually sold all of my mouthpieces made in Portland, OR (you know the ones) and have made the TA-1 my main piece. I love the V shape, the rim, and I never thought I would love the smaller size (smaller than what I've always played), but I do. I sound better, my range has increased significantly (and not just up at the top -- my pedal tones are better too), and it just makes me happy! Great job, and thanks!" -Robert Kerr

Description

The Trent Austin Signature Mouthpiece From Austin Custom Brass

Now you can play on the same model mouthpiece that I perform on regularly! The TA1 is a mouthpiece that I created to be my own “daily driver” for most of my work. I needed a comfortable rim and great efficiency for extended practice sessions and small group gigs, but I still wanted a rich sound with lots of character. The TA1 design gave me all that and more. It has now become one of the most popular designs in the ACB line!

It’s hard to describe this mouthpiece in full detail but I can give you a snapshot into what I designed:

I love the great vintage pieces of the 20’s-60’s from such makers as King, Heim, Al Cass, Giardinelli, Vincent Bach (NY), Parduba, and Purviance. I truly believe some of the most fantastic design concepts came out of that “golden age” of trumpet. I’ve been very lucky to acquire mouthpieces used by many of the world’s greatest trumpet players.

One of my favorites is the special mouthpiece made for one of my heroes, Clark Terry. Clark’s piece, which was based on a Gustat Heim design, had a wonderful “vee” shaped cup. It was incredibly efficient without making the tone brittle or strident. I incorporated the V-cup shape into my TA1, giving it both wonderful ease/efficiency and an incredible tone.

While the TA1 is based on Clark Terry’s mouthpiece, I made a few alterations and improvements. Clark’s original rim design was VERY flat, so for the TA1 I modified the rim and cup to make it more accessible for today’s modern player. The TA1 rim is still flat, but not nearly as pronounced as on Clark’s mouthpiece. I increased the diameter of the piece as well, as the original was a tiny bit small for my taste. I blended the cup entrance to the throat a bit more to make the balance between cup and bore much more efficient. The TA1 also has a slightly bigger backbore to help today’s player, as many prefer slightly more open backbores to the tighter vintage designs.

Another thing you’ll notice in the pictures is my custom blank. I believe this weight distribution helps to maximize efficiency and increase the color spectrum over either the typical “Bach” style or heavy blanks.

To describe this piece in a “modern context”:

  • The rim would be like a 5-7 Bach diameter
  • Cup is a V shape
  • #26 throat
  • Slightly more open backbore than Bach standard

Each mouthpiece will go through not only rigorous quality control but each piece will be tested personally by Trent Austin. This ensures that the equipment you are receiving will be the absolutely best quality without any compromise to “get it sold”. This is the most important aspect we can offer our clients!

Here's a customer review of the TA1:

"After a 51 year hiatus from playing I decided to take up the trumpet again. I had a lot of study and practice ahead of me. I had no idea that there was so many mouthpieces available for the artist in today’s world. In my day a mouthpiece was just another mouthpiece as far as I knew. I was having a lot of trouble with the higher registration and aching chops. Practice was hard and frustrating for me. After much research  I decided that a call to Josh at ACB was in order. I might add that it is a real treat to call a phone number a talk to a human that knows their business. We discussed my problems and with great advice I purchased a ACB -TA1 mouthpiece. I popped the TA1 on my Brasspire  trumpet (purchased from ACB also) and practiced for a while. My range was up at least an octave +, low range was much easier and the comfort was as good as it gets in my opinion... no more aching chops. I soon bought a TA1MDF mouthpiece for my flugelhorn. Same exact deal as the trumpet TA1. Now I finally feel that my practice time is making a real difference in my task at hand. I can’t tell how much of a pleasure it is to have the folks at Austin Custom Brass as my pals. My next purchase will be the Brasspire 850 flugelhorn.

Thanks, Trent and Josh for your help and expertise.

Chuck"

    Ta1 mouthpiece

Posted by Tom on 21st May 2022

I am currently playing a 3C from ACB. I wanted to try something smaller and so I tried this. Unfortunately in the upper register this one closed off on me so though the sound was quite nice and it was in tune I think I have too much lip intrusion for this mouthpiece so I have returned it and will stay with my ACB 3c

    Above and Beyond

I just want to thank Trent and his team for an amazing mouthpiece. I ordered this mouthpiece to honestly try the company out before I invested in anything more expensive from them. I've only read good things about this company and am interested in some of the C trumpets. The mouthpiece ended up being on back order and Trent himself called me and was able to send me the Monette version of the TA1 that they had available so I wouldn't have to wait with no extra charge. He also sent me a CD of his with the delivery. This was a surprise when I opened the package. I will definitely be doing business again with ACB! Thank you for your awesome customer service and a great mouthpiece!

Did not know how much a high quality mouthpiece could improve the sound from my old horn. Very rich and full. Love it.

Thanks Trent - great mpc(TA1). Now it's hard to practice on my other mpc. I may need to place another order soon.

Signature mouthpiece is a work of art

Posted by Petrus Van Amstel on 18th May 2013

Growing up learning to play the trumpet, I found Bach mouthpieces difficult to play. Though they produce a lovely tone, not one Bach I own, 7B, 1C, 6, and Megatone 7C is easy to play. I would have never known how much harder I was working to control my airflow, pitch, tone and range, had I not had the opportunity to play Trent Austin’s Custom Brass trumpet mouthpiece, a size 3, which he enclosed along with my standard issue CarolBrass 3C mouthpiece in the 6280 model I purchased from his online shop in January. The CarolBrass trumpet mouthpiece comes closer to the Bach in feel and tone, but Trent’s ACB is a whole different mouthpiece. It’s tight and powerful but best of all I feel like the mouthpiece does what I want it to do without compromise. The best way to compare the experience of playing a Bach with that of an ACB mouthpiece is to think of the experience of playing with a wood tennis racquet. Wood tennis racquets were used by professional tennis players up until the late 1960s when metal and then graphite tennis racquets were introduced. Where wood racquets one virtue was the ability to control and place a shot, it came at the expense of power. It takes a lot of strength to hit a tennis ball hard with a wooden racquet. With the introduction of graphite tennis racquets, players were able to enjoy the twin virtues of power and control. For me, it became easier to hit the ball with speed and power with a graphite racquet and the game became more fun to play for me. Trent Austin’s signature mouthpiece is like my Prince graphite. It is easy to play with, and gives me both power and control. One of the great pleasures in playing with this mouthpiece is exploring the tonal range, pitch, and color, I am able to produce. Lip slurs and glissandos were techniques I had only read about but was unable to produce cleanly on any of my Bachs. These techniques are easy for me to achieve with Trent’s signature mouthpiece. In fact, I am still tickled by all the things I can do with it. I feel like my skill level and tonal range has advanced tremendously. I hit high notes easily and cleanly and can drop to low notes without distortion or fuzz. I love punching out clear staccato blasts and then whispering cleanly and clearly in lower range. In short, it slots precisely and that is a large part of the pleasure in playing with this mouthpiece. Trent’s signature mouthpiece has a backbore that is close in size to my JetTone T2B, so it is easy to render a blast that could peel paint, as the old timers used to say. Trent’s Signature mouthpiece is a serious mouthpiece that makes me sound better than I know myself to be. It is beautifully designed and engineered in a way that gives me the feeling of complete control when I play with it. Notes are precisely rendered and very forgiving of weaknesses even when my lip tires. What tickles me the most though is that with this mouthpiece, I am able to hear subtleties on my CarolBrass trumpet that I hadn’t heard before using the mouthpieces of different manufacturers. I’m not giving up on my Bachs by any means. But if I was forced to choose only one mouthpiece for my horn, it would Trent’s signature trumpet mouthpiece. It is beautifully designed and intelligently engineered. More trumpet players should know about ACB mouthpieces.

Great blend of Old an New

Posted by Jeff Perry on 5th Oct 2010

I have the KA1 and the TA1 - essentially the same model. This piece is a great blend of the old vintage sound with the modern technology. EXACTLY what I have been looking for! I can everything on it, even a couple of lead application. Great all around and excellent small group jazz piece. Thanks Trent!!

    The Perfect Mate

Posted by Allan Stummer on 20th Sep 2010

I have been playing on a Monette mpc. for as long as I can remember and they are excellent. However, Trent suggested I try one of his new mouthpieces. He sent me a ACB-1 1/4. It was not the right fit. Then he sent me his custom TA-1 and what a difference. It transformed my Adams which is a large bore into a lead horn. I can't say enough about how great it feels and plays. And best of all, you will never find a better quality for the price. Remember, I play Monette and you're talking about more than twice as much for a lot less. Thanks again Trent for all your help. You're the Best of the Best
